Aim of the study

To observe the effect of Emdogain on the vitality of ex vivo supragingival plaque and to compare its effect with that of 0.2 % chlorhexidine (CHX). The study was carried out as a result of the clinical observation of reduced inflammation and better healing at sites where Emdogain® had been used.

Materials and methods

Twenty-four patients suffering from adult periodontitis abstained from brushing for 4 days. At day 5, plaque biofilm samples were taken from each patient. The plaque was divided into 5 parts and subject to the following treatments for 2 minutes : NaCl, enamel matrix derivative dissolved in water, Emdogain®, vehicle PGA and 0.2 % CHX. Plaque vitality was assessed.

Results

The mean vitality of plaque was significantly reduced by Emdogain®, PGA and CHX. The effect of Emdogain® seems to be linked to PGA.

Conclusion

Emdogain® might have antibacterial activity on ex vivo dental plaque.

Commentary

The in vivo activity still has to be assessed.
