Aim of the study

To compare the results obtained between connective tissue grafts and acellular dermal membranes in the treatment of root recession.

Materials and methods

Nine patients with bilateral Miller Class 1 and 2 lesions (30 recessions) were treated with the two protocols. Various clinical indices were recorded.

Results

In terms of the reduction in recession, gain in attachment and probing depth, there was no significant difference between the two techniques. On the other hand, although by 6 months both techniques increased the amount of keratinised tissue, the result was significantly better for the connective tissue group at 3 months, using the technique of Langer and Langer (1985).

Conclusion

Acellular dermal membranes can be used predictably in the treatment of root recession.

Commentary

This study demonstrates a new technique for the treatment of root recession using membranes obtained from human donors. All cells are removed, leaving only the type 1 collagen. This type of allograft is not permitted for use in France.
