Aim of the study

The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between cardiovascular diseases, their risk factors and periodontal diseases.

Materials and methods

One thousand and ninety-four Israeli army men aged 29-53 years were included in the study ; 151 of them had cardiovascular disease documented by angiography. The control group comprised 943 healthy subjects. The cholesterol and triglyceride levels of each subject were determined. The severity of periodontal disease was assessed by CPITN. Statistical analysis was performed with Chi2 test.

Results

The significant association between CPITN score 4 and hypercholesterolaemia is again shown. Also, a possible association between this score and arteriosclerosis is reported.

Conclusion

Elevated cholesterol levels are proposed as a possible link between periodontal inflammation and arteriosclerosis.

Commentary

Arteriosclerosis is an important major cause of premature death in adults. Inadequate oral hygiene and periodontal disease have been shown in patients with arteriosclerosis. Chronic periodontal inflammation may be secondary to problems of blood flow amongst those suffering from atheromatous cardiovascular disease.
