To evaluate PMN responses after placing biodegradable guided tissue regeneration (GTR) membranes in Class 2 mandibular furcation lesions.
Ten Class 2 buccal furcation on first mandibular molars were treated by GTR. The membranes used were either polylactic-citric-acid-ester (PLA, Guidor®) or glycolide-lactic-co-polymer (PGL, Polyglactine 910). The inflammatory response of PMNs was assessed at day 0 then each week for 6 weeks and then at 12 and 24 weeks, using gingival fluid ß-glucuronidase and ß -N-acetyl-hexosaminidase.
The levels of enzymes increased between 0 and 6 weeks. After this period, they reduced to their initial value by 12 to 24 weeks. This reduction was more rapid when PGL membranes were used. Both membranes clearly showed an improvement in the clinical parameters following treatment.
The release of enzymes from PMNs after the use of GTR membranes reflects early gingival healing. These results suggest a membrane-dependent response. However, the host response did not affect the course of clinical healing.
Theoretically, the mechanism of biodegradation by hydrolysis is not affected by the inflammatory processes.
